Sea is said to be a certain cure for numerous a maladies. The beach town of Kovalam is then one place for the tourists to soothe themselves for better. Poised along the picturesque and vast expanse of the Arabian Sea, Kovalam is situated around 16 k .m . from Thiruvananthapuram. Halcyon Castle of Kovalam is a historical structure that was built as a beach resort for Regent Maharani Sethu Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore in 1920s. Even the European visitors, back in 1930s, saw the town had a lot of scope to do well as a tourist resort. The place underwent a lot of exposure and uplift during the seventies, the time around when the hippie tradition was gaining momentum across the globe and some of the followers landed in Kovalam while on their way to the Hippie Trail of Ceylon. Before that fishing was the main occupation of the place. Post transformation, a number of guest houses, home stays, and luxury and budget hotels in Kovalam sprang up over the years.

Kovalam has a number of beaches. The prominent one among those which attract the prime attention of most of the tourists is the Lighthouse Beach. It is the southernmost beach of the town and has a 118 ft high lighthouse atop the Kurumkal hillock to which it owes the origin of its name. The red and white stones of the lighthouse stand in contrast with the green surroundings and the blue sky. The reflection of light during night makes this place quite enticing. This beach is lined up by eateries and hotels in Kovalam. Another one is the Eve’s beach, more popularly known as the Hawah beach. As the dawn breaks, tourists can spot hordes of fishermen setting sail into the sea to go about their business. Hawah beach is described as an aquarelle on moonlit nights as the blue water and headland glisten under the white light from the sky.

Hotels in Kovalam offer reasonable accommodations to tourists as they have a range of tariffs to suit the pockets of different visitors. Less treaded Samudra beach, although, has less overnight accommodation for tourists as it is the just the hub for local fishermen and does not offer much except more solitude and some soothing scenery, which is sufficient for some rejuvenation if that is all you want. There are some other beaches as well.

Vizhinjam sea port, well­known for a number of multi­religious sites and a good variety of fish, is just about three kilometers from Kovalam. One more attraction in the resort town are the ayurvedic salons that help you recuperate and relax.
