Enhancing Teaching with Show-and-Tell Tech Examples
In the whole history of teaching and studying, there has never been such a miraculous source of information as the Internet. Moreover, this globally present affair is only the tip of the tech-iceberg of possibilities that both professors and students have today. But are they doing as much as they can to actually set role models for your students? Telling them that they can use online sources and their gadgets for earning is not enough. They have to be shown how to achieve that.
Create informative surroundings
Those who work in wealthy schools in fancy neighborhoods usually take many of the novelty tools for granted. Nevertheless, many schools still cannot afford full-scale access to modern learning items for every student. But this is where motivated teachers stand out from their routine-driven colleagues. Even if your school does not possess a smart board or a classroom with a computer for every kid, it still does not mean that you cannot create your own story to show your students how to improve their learning.
You can:
- create a mailing list and send them emails on a regular basis, with the most relevant and interesting sites for units you are going to do
- take them to a specialized classroom and use a computer to show them some interesting sites or games for learning
- enrich your classroom with website addresses that could help them get the information they need in a smoother way; always accompanied with some photos
- post interesting learning web addresses on your school’s website
Use your gadget
If you are still not using a smartphone, it does not mean that you are not a great teacher. However, showing your students that you are equal to them in terms of technological progress will convince more of them to listen to your advice. As a matter of fact, letting them know that you gladly play educational games or use mind-boosting apps on your phone could make them try some of them and see how they work. There is no better way of persuading your students do what you want than setting an example to them through your own behavior.
Share Learning Experiences
Very close in line with the previous strategy is the notion of sharing your learning habits with your students. If you tell them how you used to study (or you still do; for instance, going to PhD), they will be more open and share their experiences with them. It could easily happen that you also pick up some useful ideas from them and even apply those methods in your learning process. If not directly for you, your students’ online sources might be useful for your own children. Presenting the learning place of your greatest interest to your students will give them new ideas for studying and more materials to think about.
Personal Effort for Class Benefit
In today’s classrooms, a fast Internet connection is a very common thing. Even if your school does not possess its own laptop, you could get one for your personal use and bring it to school, to improve the quality of your work. In addition to that, learning can be easier through the use of a digital projector. These devices are perfect for creating classes that correspond with your teaching preferences and your students’ needs, while at the same time letting in the breath of technological advancement. So, even if your community is a poor one, you can still find a way to show your students what modern studying looks like.
Technology should be used for easier living. If we know that studying is such a troublesome process for many students, applying modern IT achievements to education could turn this process into a pleasant experience. Teachers have to use their share of responsibility and give their students that opportunity.
